The Granting Process
If you are a Gift Fund donor, you can support charitable organizations worldwide by recommending a grant to:
- A U.S.-based charitable organization that supports a specific international cause or charity, or
- An intermediary U.S. charity that specializes in international philanthropy
Grants to U.S.-Based Charitable Organizations
To support a U.S.-based IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) organization that supports a foreign charity or cause, you may recommend a grant just as you do today.
Grants to U.S. Intermediary Charities
You can recommend a grant to an IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) intermediary charity through the existing process.
Learn about some of these Intermediary Charities
For a specific international charity, designate a "Special Purpose":
To support a particular project that meets a specific giving objective in a country or region, your grant recommendation should specify the international charity and the project you wish to support in the Special Purpose section.
For example, you can specify: "$10,000 to Give2Asia for Friends International in Cambodia to support their walk-in center for homeless youth."
Alternately, you can specify the charity's general work: "$10,000 to Give2Asia for general operations for Friends International in Cambodia and Laos."
For a "customized program":
If your charitable objectives require additional research by an intermediary who specializes in the specific region, most organizations will work with you for an additional fee to create custom projects in partnership with international charities. This generally requires research, monitoring, and reporting fees.
Contact the intermediary charity directly before you recommend a grant from the Gift Fund.
Evaluating Your Options
Research on your own:
- Contact a foreign charity to find out if it has a U.S. organization that supports it, or use GuideStar® to research
- Choose an intermediary charity that specializes in the global region you would like to support and contact them about fees and specific causes they can help with
Contact the Gift Fund at 800-952-4438 with any questions. We can help you determine what your options are and get you started recommending grants in support of the global causes you care about.
